Harry Ballengee joined fast draw in January of 1976. He has seen a lot of things change, and a lot of shooters come and go. Word of mouth is how he found out about the sport of fast draw, and got involved with it. Due to Harry and a couple of other shooters, Annie Oakley Days contest was born, and that contest ran for many years.
Harry has traveled to Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, and of course, his home state of Ohio, to attend contests, and has won too many awards to mention. But I think modesty also stops him from mentioning them.
Harry and his wife Marcia are one of the nicest couple you can ever meet in our sport! Harry will tell you that there is nothing about the sport he does not enjoy. And would tell a newcomer to fast draw that it is a great sport, and good time for the whole family. And Harry would know. At one time, Harry, wife Marcia, and their three daughters were all shooting. And years ago, there were three generations of Ballengees competing in the sport. Harry, daughter Bonnie, and Becky, with grandson Bret, were all shooting. Harry was the first grandfather to compete against his grandson. The grandson almost won! Later on, Harry’s grandson Cory joined him.
Harry and Marcia have been married for over fifty years. Marcia and their daughters no longer compete. Marcia will tell a newcomer’s wife, that it can be boring, if you do not participate. But what a great group of people you will meet.
Harry is retired from his job, that he worked thirty-nine years. And that was at the Dayton Power & Light Company. He also has held office of councilman of Greenville, Ohio. He also enjoys bowling, and golf. Harry has held many offices in the OFDA for all his years in the sport.
His family and friend’s reaction to Harry’s fast draw sport, they call him
“Quick Draw”, and for good reason.
